Officially named the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States. It’s named for George Washington, the nation’s first president. The District covers 61 square miles of land, home to an estimated population of 695,000 people.
Washington, D.C. was formed after the passage of the Residence Act in 1790, which approved a national capital on the Potomac River. Washington today is one of the most visited cities in the world, hosting more than 20 million tourists every year. The District contains more than 7,400 acres of parkland, nearly one fifth of the city’s total area. In addition to the workings of the federal government, Washington, D.C. is home to a wide variety of well-known monuments and museums, while also a major media center. Because the District is not a state, it has no voting representation in Congress.
